Moon light falling (Titeann solas na gealaí)

Description

After I had named this painting, I came across a poem called ‘Winter thoughts’ by poet and writer Suzanne Brown. On reading her poem I could relate some of words to this image and the feeling I got when I was painting it.  Although her poem is set in winter and this painting has a summer feel for me, there are thoughts which thread both together beautifully.

Brown speaks of ‘listening light’ as moonlight falls, ‘When night allows each shape to take light in its shape’.  For me the moonlight gives a magical shape-shifting quality to everything it touches as the light within and around each shape morphs.

There is a mystical element to painting nighttime landscapes which always draws me towards a powerful quietness.  As if shadows are anxiously hiding from the moonlight for fear of becoming obsolete and the earth simply waits to witness the outcome of this careful game.

The filtering of moonlight through the trees in this painting lends itself to the birth of mythical forms.  It is a painting to sit with, gaze into and be with. Every time you engage with it, more will reveal itself to you.
