Stoirm ag teacht (Storm coming)

Description

This is a rather moody painting but the darkness is contrasted by reflected brightness in the cloud formations.

The painting is typical of the building storms that approach the Donegal shoreline from the northwest and the cloud light is reflected in the shallow waters of the muddy estuary, in this case Trawbreaga Bay.

Trawbreaga Bay (the lying strand) is the area before Malin Town, including the Isle of Doagh, Five Finger Strand and Glashedy Island. It is designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and is a Wildlife Reserve which was established due to efforts made by locals, including the Inishowen Gun Club, several years ago.

Over-wintering birds include Barnacle Geese, Chough and the Pale Bellied Brent Geese. Other common birds spotted on the bay are Godwit, Dunlin and over the past few years an Egyptian Egret has made it’s home here.  It’s like a small white stork with grey-blue feet.

The hide and viewing area just at the bridge before Malin, is a wonderful place for en plein air with shelter in the Hide if the weather turns.
